Where are We?
Malawi is land locked, bordered by Tanzania, Zambia, &
Mozambique. At its widest point it’s only about 100 miles wide & about 525 miles
long. The country is about the size of
Pennsylvania or Cuba. About 10
million people live here.
Byron’s farm is on a high
escarpment above Lake Malawi. The lake, in
the Great Rift Valley, is the 3rd largest lake in Africa - 50 miles wide
& 355 miles long. It’s home to more
fish species than any inland body of water in the world! 95% of the 600 species found here are found no where
else! Brilliant colored cichlids dart about
like it’s a private, well-stocked aquarium!
The farm is northeast of Rumphi, which is about 70 km north of Mzuzu. Byron gets his mail at Mzokoto, at the base of the mountain on hwy 1.
Lots has changed for the better since the 1994 elections – there were many
restrictions in Malawi under the oppressive intolerant regime of Dr.
Banda.
